Why Businesses Should Never Overlook Logo Design

When any business starts out, there are at least three items that require immediate attention: What unique product or service does the business provide? What will be the name of the business? What will the logo look like? Logo design may seem like a less important, rather superficial thing to consider when dealing with all the other things involved in a start-up business, but it's more important than you probably realize.

Business names and logos are the first things a potential customer sees and will then after forever associate with that business. Successful businesses know the importance of this, and spend hefty portions of their time and money trying to come up with the logo that will best represent them. For example, the Apple logo, one of the most iconic contemporary logos, took 22 years to develop into what we know it as today. While products, services, and customer service are ultimately the most important part of a customer's experience, names and logos may have a more subtle, psychological role in how customers view a business. Think of any well-known business at the top of your head. Google, Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, McDonald's, Starbucks. These are just a few I can think of in the spur-of-the-moment. All of these have images that are associated with them.

Google's logo is just its name in a recognizable and multi-color font, Twitter is a lower-case t in baby blue or a bird, Facebook is a lower-case f, Youtube has the red and white play button, McDonald's has golden arches, Starbucks is the strange mermaid lady. The list goes on and on But anytime you see one of these associated images, you immediately know the company and think of your experiences with them. If a business wants to be memorable and impressionable, it needs to have a fairly simple and easily recognizable logo.

If you are the owner of a business, you should take logo design seriously. Consider an image that reflects some characteristic of your business as a whole. For example, if you want to convey that your services are fast, you may want to use a sleek font. If you sell gourmet cupcakes, you might want to use bubbly and colorful fonts. I don't know, but that's what I associate with cupcakes, and I'm willing to bet I'm not the only one These are the things you should be thinking of when you create or update your logo. What do you want you customers to see every time they think of you? You should also think about the importance of simplicity when designing a logo. Apple's first logo was a crest encircled by a ribbon with the words "APPLE COMPUTER CO." It depicted Sir Isaac Newton under an apple tree with a vast countryside in the background. This logo only lasted one year before it was scrapped for the simpler apple design. With all things considered, if you feel like you're not the most creative and logo-savvy person, and if you have the resources, you may wish to hire a graphic designer to devise your business logo for you.
